Mariam was one of the most positive people that I have been blessed to know. From the first time I met her 40 years ago, I knew that this was a special person, always smiling, enthusiastic, and genuinely interested in others (and for that matter, interested in everything).
In all the time that I knew her, I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone. And the mutual love and reverence between her and Doug never seemed to diminish over the years. My favorite memory of her will be at Norbert’s memorial, when I spent most of the evening talking with the two of them. She was just radiating warmth that night, and she still looked the same as she had when I left Canada 30 years earlier.
I was so glad that we got to reconnect and that Vicky and I finally got to visit in Eagle Lake after my mother passed. Mariam was the kind of person that most of us aspire to be like, but fail. What a sweeter and kinder world this would be, with more people like her in it!
