Mariam, my dearest sister, lovingly known as “Malu”. She was a shining star, always with her sparkling smile and strong faith. How I miss her love that comforted, cuddled, hugged and warmed me to my core.
After moving to Canada she met the love of her life — Douglas. She courageously broke culture norms and married him after confiding her concerns to me. They shared a life of travel and adventure for the remainder of her life.
Rain or shine, she believed in her commitment to work. She’d drive through stormy weather to get to work and dedicated herself to being the best she could. Resilience was her second nature – she assured and reassured me, patted me, and picked me up with her positive attitude, spreading joy when she spoke and always remembering birthdays.
“Bai”, she’d say “smile” and I’d reply “yes, mithi maa” (“Yes, sweet heart/dear”). In October 2019, while Malu and Doug were preparing to move, I along with my daughter Zabin, helped with packing, cooking, and eating of meals, while remembering, reminiscing and sharing past experiences…memories I will cherish forever.
Her love of life, travelling and exploring the world while soaking in the pleasures of having friends and family around her was her treasure. She stood strong with her conviction of always being a rock for everyone who needed her. Her dedication to serve her family, friends and the community was infinite. She begged for more time to live, but her allotted time was running out, something she eventually accepted on her final return with humility and forgiveness.
May you rest in Eternal Peace – my dearest Malu!
